With Congress going back into session on November 30th this is a good
time to remind Senators Cantwell and Murray that we want them to
support H.R. 2806. The House Bill may come up in the Senate Energy and
Natural Resources Committee at any time and with Senator Cantwell
sitting on this committee, hopefully, we can help convince her of the
importance of rebuilding that historic road on its original route,
'The Old Wagon Road' where it is out of reach of the flooding Stehekin
River (all the way to Cottonwood Camp).

Senator Parlette's office has kindly supplied us with addresses, phone
and fax numbers. Rumor has it that old time Senate staffers still pay
attention to faxes, so....
State Senator Linda Evans Parlette wrote in her November 24 update:

Bill to reopen Stehekin Valley Road now before the U.S. Senate

On Monday, Oct. 26 the U.S. House of Representatives debated and
passed H.R. 2806, a measure that would allow reopening of the Upper
Stehekin Valley Road. The House amended the bill slightly to allow
Congress to retain control over where the new road goes, and includes
language instructing the National Park Service not to change any of
its current priorities when it comes to which roads to build.

The measure is now before the Senate's committee on Energy and Natural
Resources for consideration. The bill's passage in the Senate depends
heavily on the support of our state's two senators, Sen. Patty Murray
and Sen. Maria Cantwell. Sen. Cantwell is a member of the Energy and
Natural Resources Committee.

As I've mentioned in past e-mails to you, former Washington governor
and U.S. senator Daniel J. Evans is a staunch supporter of this bill.
On Nov. 17 he met with Sens. Cantwell and Murray to discuss the
measure and why he believes it should pass. If you have not already
done so, you may also wish to share your thoughts with Sens. Cantwell
and Murray on this important bill. If you need their contact
information let me know.

I will keep you posted on this issue as there are new developments to report.
