I met Wally in 1976. I wasn't sure what to think about this local guy. He was an evening fixture at the Lodge, at the lunch counter.

I always knew that the time would come to write about Wally Winkel, and I almost hoped he'd still be alive to read his own legend.

Long time friend, neighbor and Stehekin resident, Wally Winkel passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2009 at the Chelan Hospital after a courageous, 7-month battle with cancer and other related complications..

I had a great hike from Moore Point to Stehekin. May is best for that Lake shore trail, flowers were perfect and lots of wildlife to see. Loved those of the Blue Grouse!!!
