The Merrits
by Carol Riley Knapp

Carol Riley Knapp is the fifth generation of the family she has written about. She grew up in Omak, Washington and graduated from high school there. Carol sings and has cut a CD of her singing the old hymns. She spends a lot of time spinning, knitting and taking great pictures. She married Rev. DAvid E. Knapp in 1968 and they have 3 daughters and 10 grandchildren.

I did not know my mother, Maida, because she left when I was one year old. I only saw her once for a couple of hours when I was ten. Stehekin is where Maida had lived with her parents, Fred and Myrtle Merrit. My grandfather's parents, John Ed and Edith Merritt, lived there, also, starting in 1892. They had some of the first sawmills in Stehekin. My great, great-grandfather, Huratio Nelson Merritt, had come to live in Stehekin in 1888. He was the second person to settle in Stehekin.
